1. How is this Lake Como & Lugano tour different from the usual "Como–Bellagio–Lugano" day trips?
It's built around the train, not a coach — so you spend the day on the lakes rather than in traffic. What that means in practice:
- Swiss train from Milan — fast and comfortable, no highway.
- Small group (12 on weekdays, 14 on weekends) — calm, personal, easy to move.
- A Lake Como boat cruise — real time on the water, not just a viewpoint.
- A quiet lakeside village most day trips skip.
- Two lakes and two countries — Como and Lugano — in one unhurried day.
Lake Como is more than Bellagio. Bellagio is beautiful but very busy in peak hours; this route focuses on the calmer, equally scenic side of the lake.
Prefer the classic Bellagio side? See our Bellagio, Varenna & Bellano Gorge small-group tour.
2. Is this Lake Como & Lugano tour right for me?
Ideal if you want:
- A relaxed, well-paced day across two lakes.
- Beautiful views without the heaviest crowds.
- Time in Como, Lugano, and a quiet village.
- A small group and clear English guiding.
Good to know: this is a calm, unhurried itinerary that deliberately skips Bellagio at its busiest. If your heart is set on Bellagio itself, our Bellagio & Varenna tour is the better fit.
3. What places do we visit?
The day covers the calmer, scenic side of Lake Como plus Lake Lugano:
- Como — historic center, cathedral square, lakeside walk.
- Lake Como boat cruise — villas, mountains, open water.
- A quiet lakeside village — local and calm, off the main circuit.
- Lugano, Switzerland — elegant lakefront, cafés, Swiss chocolate.
Flexible Lugano time (warm months): you can choose to stay longer, relax, or swim at the public beach. Returning to Milan later is easy — your ticket is valid on later trains.
4. Where and when does the tour start?
We meet at Milano Centrale FS, in Piazza Duca d'Aosta, in front of the BIG APPLE sculpture.
Meeting time is 8:15 AM. Please arrive a little early so we can board the train together.
5. Is transport from Milan included?
Yes — all transport is included:
- Round-trip Swiss train, Milan → Como → Lugano → Milan.
- Boat tickets on Lake Como, on reserved passes.
- Any local transfers needed during the day.
In spring and summer you can also stay longer in Lugano and return later — your ticket covers it.
6. What is the price, and how can I book?
€157 per person.
Small group — 12 guests on weekdays, 14 on weekends.

Prefer paying on the day of the tour? Message us on WhatsApp to arrange in-person payment.
7. Will Como and Lugano be crowded?
Both can be lively in summer, but this route is designed to stay calmer than the Bellagio side. It helps by using an early start, the Swiss train (no traffic), reserved boat tickets, a stop in a quiet village, and optional flexible time in Lugano.
8. What is the best time of year for this tour?
Best months: April–May and mid-September–October.
Summer: warm and lively — great for swimming in Lugano.
Winter: quiet, scenic, more local.
9. What if it rains?
The tour runs in light rain — the lakes turn quieter and very atmospheric.
If weather affects boat schedules or timing, your guide adjusts the itinerary to keep the day smooth and safe.
10. Is this tour suitable for kids or mobility issues?
The day involves cobblestones, some slopes, and boarding boats and trains.
- Kids: good from age 5+.
- Strollers: not possible.
- Wheelchairs: not possible.
11. Do you offer private versions of this tour?
Yes — several options:
- Private Swiss-train tour.
- Private van tour with hotel pickup.
- Private classic wooden-boat experience on Lake Como.
Ideal for couples, families, and special occasions.
What You'll Experience
|
In short: A calm day across two lakes and two countries — Como, a scenic boat ride, a quiet lakeside village, and Lugano in Switzerland — linked by fast Swiss trains, with real time in each place. |
How the day flows (≈10 hours, Milan to Milan)
Morning — Como. We meet at Milano Centrale and take the Swiss train to Como (about 40 min, no traffic). Time in the old town — cathedral square, historic streets, the lake promenade — then a scenic boat ride across the lake on reserved skip-the-line tickets, and a stop in a quiet lakeside village off the main circuit.
Midday — free time in Como. Back in town for lunch, shopping, or a lakeside break — an unhurried couple of hours, no rushing between stops.
Afternoon — Lugano, Switzerland. A short scenic train into Switzerland brings you to Lugano's lakefront: the palm-lined promenade, boutiques, and Swiss-chocolate shops. In warm months you can relax or swim at the lakeside beach.
Evening — back to Milan. A direct train returns you to Milan. Prefer to linger? In summer you can stay longer in Lugano and take a later train — your Swiss ticket stays valid.
|
Note: exact timings vary with train and boat schedules and the season, but the shape of the day stays the same. |

About Us
Who We Are
Abroads Tours was founded by Oleg and Stefano, licensed guides who have led over 2,000 tours across Northern Italy and Switzerland.
In 2019, I (Oleg) designed the Lake Como & Lugano route on this page. At the time I was guiding 50-seat bilingual bus tours every day for the big Milan operators — slow traffic, rushed stops, groups too large to guide properly. I wanted the opposite: small groups, fast trains, and a day built around real time on the lake, not the highway.
It worked. It became one of our core tours and, when we launched Abroads Tours in 2023, the template for how we run everything.

Today Abroads Tours is rated 5.0 on TripAdvisor — #2 of 684 things to do in Milan, with thousands of five-star reviews across TripAdvisor, GetYourGuide, Viator and Google. |
Our approach
Everything we run comes from real days on the ground, not theory.
- Small groups, so guiding is clear and personal.
- The fastest, most efficient transport for each route.
- Itineraries adjusted to real conditions, not fixed scripts.
